The state is believed to have an estimated total Black Bear population of around 800 to 1,000 bears and growing with the most bears per square mile in the northwest part of the state. This year's total included 90,242 antlered bucks, 1,113 bucks that had shed their antlers, 11,921 button bucks, and 81,692 does . All new first year cooperators are required to meet personally with their Wildlife Biologist prior to their first season in DMAP. While a doe will reach full size in two and a half years, the largest antlers will appear on well-fed bucks that are over four years old:16, trophy bucks grow the largest antlers after they are four years old In fall 2020, approximately 2,600 samples from hunter-harvested deer were submitted by participating taxidermists. The City of Fairfax also has sought to control deer without hunting. To address this decline, the number of either-sex deer hunting days on western public lands has been reduced significantly over the past decade or more to conservative levels. In suburban areas, recreational deer hunting is not sufficient to keep the population close to the cultural carrying capacity. In valleys with high grass in fields and brush along streams, the does could hide their young fawns more successfully than on ridges with sparse ground vegetation. As of May 1, 2022, 134 CWD-positive deer have been found in 10 counties in Virginia (see Table 1). While West Virginia is known statewide for its incredible hunting seasons, several southern counties stand out for one interesting reason. There are currently 99 county management units ranging in size from 26 to 1,112 square miles in area (average = 401 square miles). The impact on the habitat has been dramatic in places where the almost complete elimination of vegetation below four feet in height has eliminated any shelter for ground-nesting birds to raise their young. The state agency has defined roughly 100 management units between 26-1,112 square miles (with an average of 401 square miles). The relative abundance descriptions used above are subjective (e.g., very low/white, low/green, moderate/yellow, moderate to high/orange, and high/red). Bears were more likely to encounter fawns by chance in areas with little screening vegetation. Deer management in western Virginia has been about the same for the past couple of decades and remains two very different deer management situations. Only two other states lost population: West Virginia and Mississippi (along with Puerto Rico). Because these assumptions are not always true, regulations set over a large area will in some areas be too conservative and in some areas too liberal. Any county within 10 miles of a CWD positive deer is by rule included in a DMA and special regulations applied (e.g., carcass transportation restrictions, mandatory sampling, special seasons, etc.). If HD is not a big player in fall 2022, stable deer herds are expected across most of the Tidewater Region. Meet deer population objectives within 5 years; Monitor deer population status by management unit (county/city); Update deer population objectives (as frequently as 2 years); Use hunting as the primary deer population management tool; Manage limiting factors to attaining deer population objectives; Develop/continue site-specific deer management programs (e.g., DMAP, urban archery); Increase stakeholder support for deer population management through education and engagement. In most habitats in Virginia, deer populations exhibit density dependent population responses with deer condition and reproductive rates inversely related to deer density. 2023 Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. The Lacy Act in 1900 prohibited commercial sale of wildlife. For fall 2021, a new DMA3 will consist of Floyd, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties. To set regulations on this basis, however, is to assume that deer habitats, deer densities, and hunter pressures and public demands are similar over the entire area. Killing even a high percentage of bucks, the deer with the attractive rack of antlers desired by hunters, will reduce next year's crop of fawns far less than killing does. Male "button bucks," with antlers beginning to break through the skin, may have enough weight and testosterone to impregnate does before their first winter. Source: Fairfax County, Fairfax County Deer Management Program, While reducing the deer population to the cultural carrying capacity has become management objective for most of Virginia, the 2006 Deer Management Plan did propose increasing the number of deer in the Appalachian Plateau physiographic province and in the ridges/valleys of the lower (northern) Shenandoah Valley. home. The Department also has cooperators in DMAP, primarily in agricultural areas, whose stated objective is to reduce deer densities as low as they possibly can. Since that time, regulations have been made more conservative in some areas, and deer herds and deer kill numbers across most of the Tidewater region have been recovering.
